About Calm Corner. This part of Sunny Street is made for children who do better with calm. If your child is autistic, learns differently, or finds busy games hard, these drives, books and music boxes are a gentle way to play: slow, quiet, no flashing, no timers, nothing that rushes them. Take it at your child's pace.
For grown-ups
Calm Corner is a quiet part of Sunny Street for children with learning disabilities and complex needs. The pages are made to look at and listen to: big, colourful pictures, soft music and a gentle voice, with one simple action (swipe to turn the page).
Calm by design. Pictures stay still. Pages change only when your child swipes, with a soft fade, and no more than one page every 2 seconds. Nothing flashes, and the music is quiet. These choices do not guarantee protection from seizures; please follow your child's care team's advice about screens.
Sound. Tap once to start the story voice and soft music (browsers stay silent until the first tap). Inside a book, press and hold the top-left corner for 2 seconds to turn the story voice or the music on or off, show the words, hide the arrow buttons, or leave the book. The iPad volume buttons and mute switch work too.
Your child's name. In the same grown-up settings you can type your child's first name, and the narrator says it now and then in the story. The name is matched against our list of ready-made names; what you type is not sent anywhere and is kept only on this device. Delete removes it.
Turning pages. Swipe, or tap the arrow buttons. With a mouse: left click for the next page, right click to go back; the arrow keys work too.
Works without internet. Open the Teddy Bear's Sunny Drive once while online; after that it also opens with no connection (best after Add to Home Screen).
Set up the iPad first. Set the brightness to a comfortable middle level and turn off Auto-Brightness and True Tone, so the screen doesn't change brightness by itself. Set Auto-Lock to Never while reading, and check the volume before you start. A stand at a comfortable distance is better than holding it close.
Keep the iPad on one page. Turn on Guided Access (Settings > Accessibility > Guided Access), open a book, then triple-click the side or home button. Your child can swipe pages without leaving the book.
Easy to find again. In Safari, tap Share, then Add to Home Screen.
